How One Nonprofit Used a Sweepstakes to Create an Inclusive Approach to Fundraising

Strategy: A silent or live auction tends to limit participation to donors who can afford to write a substantial check. On the other hand, a sweepstakes fundraiser allows everyone to choose a donation amount that feels right for them and still have a good chance to win. Little Kids Rock took a popular auction item and ran a TapKat sweepstakes instead, helping them build their donor base and reach more people.

Story: Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives by restoring, expanding and innovating music education in schools, worked closely with the Gibson Foundation and the band Def Leppard to acquire a guitar used and signed by Vivian Campbell. After the guitar was donated and signed, they built their sweepstakes site and launched!

The sweepstakes model was a perfect fit for Little Kids Rock, which is committed to bringing inclusive and diverse music education to students of all ages across 48 states. Because TapKat sweepstakes entrants can choose the dollar amount of their donation to enter, anyone could enter for a chance to win the signed guitar for as little as $25.

After running their TapKat sweepstakes for one month, Little Kids Rock raised $28,325, and had a high level of participation with 352 donations. The sweepstakes was not only a financial success, it also engaged their donors in way that allowed everyone to participate at a comfortable and inclusive financial level.
