Tapping into the Local Community’s Love of Basketball Spelled Success for this Nonprofit

Strategy: The Delores Project based in Denver, Colorado builds belonging for people experiencing homelessness through the provision and advocacy of safe, dignified, and trauma-informed shelter and support services, and supportive housing. They chose to run a sweepstakes that would appeal specifically to their local community of Denver, where many people are excited about the local NBA team, the Denver Nuggets!

Story: In 2023, The Delores Project raised $8,900 with the ultimate Denver Nuggets Fan Package. It included a Nuggets Quarter Season membership (top tickets to 10 home games), a signed player photo, a signed poster, and a $300 gift certificate for Denver Nuggets merchandise.

The Delores Project made a strategic choice: Most of their donor base is living in Denver, and their services specifically support the Denver homeless community. To them it made sense to keep their sweepstakes local, and it was a big success! $8,900 is a meaningful raise for their nonprofit.

What did the Delores Project do right? This organization did a great job tapping into the interests of their donor base and their local community to create a sweepstakes that got everybody talking. Not only that, but their timing was impeccable: They closed the sweepstakes in early November, when the NBA season is just starting to rev up and everyone is excited about the teams.

Thanks to the sweepstakes, they’ve continued to build a donor base that is interested in things happening in the Denver area, people they believe will be deeply interested in the success of their mission.
